Short Courses

Psychology in Film

Portrait Man Suffering From Schizophrenia

This course is for students who are interested in Psychology and in exploring themes such as attachment theory, memory and mental illness through the medium of film.

Examples of films to be screened include Memento, Shutter Island and We Need To Talk About Kevin, as well as documentaries such as Bowling for Columbine.

This course may also be of interest to Film Studies students, as we will discuss the narrative structure of these films, as well as how the medium represents stereotypical assumptions about abnormality.

Introduction to Forensic and Criminal Psychology

Court Room Hammer

This course is aimed at those students who might be interested in studying Psychology or Criminology at degree level.

We explore the psychology of crime, delving into issues such as the problems in defining crime, where we look at the role of culture, age, context and circumstance. In addition, we consider approaches to offender profiling, as well as biological (e.g. genetics, biochemistry, brain physiology) and psychological (e.g. cognitive and psychodynamic) explanations for offending behaviour, and the psychology of the courtroom.

Finally, we contemplate ways of preventing crime and dealing with offenders (e.g. sentencing, rehabilitation). Throughout the course emphasis is placed on research studies that form the basis of this knowledge.

Saving the planet with science

This course will help you to engage with environmental issues from a scientific perspective and to get involved on a practical level.

In previous years we’ve looked at a range of topics including climate change, waste management, carbon trading, loss of biodiversity and rewilding. Classroom activities have included research, debate and giving presentations as well as opportunities to be involved in campaigning on green issues, both inside and outside college.

We’ve also been involved in practical conservation work across the college site – surveying native birds found species and capturing them on camera, making biodegradable bird feeders, beach clean-ups, planting a native hedgerow and sowing a wildflower meadow.

The course is flexible enough to take on board the particular interests of the students enrolled – so let us help you explore your environmental passions!

This course will appeal to biologists, geographers and chemists, and anyone else with an interest in living sustainably and reducing their impact on the planet.

Sustainable society

Sustainable society gives students an opportunity to discuss the environmental issues facing our world and how we can approach these challenges and solve them.

Students will look at a variety of issues such as the views of innovators like Elon Musk, design eco homes and present them, consider the future of the planet through hard hitting documentaries such as “An Inconvenient Sequel” and the impact of fast fashion.

Aimed at students who have a keen interest in the future of our planet and how we can adapt our current lifestyles to ensure their impact reduced, it is a course for students who want to think deeper, solve problems and be creative in the process.

World of movies

Film Studies Felix Mooneeram Unsplash

Enjoy watching movies and interested in global issues?

Geography and geographical processes have been the inspiration for many Hollywood blockbusters, such as Slumdog Millionaire, Waterworld and Deepwater Horizon.

In this complimentary study we will watch geography-based films and spend time discussing the geographical themes of the film and whether this is true to reality or not.

This complimentary study is aimed at any student – you do not need to study A-level geography, just have a keen interest in films and discussing the aspects of films.

Long Courses

Robotics

Robotic Car

Interested in building robots?  Like programming?

We will be making robotic cars from Arduino kits and trying out things like line tracking, light tracking, voice control, racing, lighting systems.

No experience required.
